Conserve, Reuse and Recycle!

For those of us in the East, this has been one warm summer!  We have hit the record mark more than once and the drought meter is ticking.

With our water levels below average for the season, lets hope for a wet fall to add to our diminished supplies.

Conserving water is a MUST for now.  Please heed the direction of your town or city if there is a water restriction in place.  Some towns require watering only on even/odd days, or on certain days of the week.

Rain barrels can be an added benefit to your home during these times.  They collect rain water, which you can then use to water your ever thirsty plants.  Whether you live in the city or the burbs, a rain barrel will help with water conservation, and your water bills!

On a landscaping note, although mulch looks good and warms any landscape, plants don’t really like it much.  It can actually keep

Having traveled to a few tropical locations over the past few months, and having just returned from a trip abroad, I am still disappointed with the general effort of different countries in the recycling/environmental awareness efforts. I understand alot has to do with the various economic stability of some countries, however, even large corporations and air travel facilities are making a meager effort in the fight to save our environment. Some smaller companies are making more strides in helping with recycling and the “green” movement than most larger organizations and corporations. These corporations (hotels, restaurants, airports, etc.) could so easily make a significant impact. Most hotels, both nationally and internationally, will post a “We are Green” card and ask you to reuse your towel to conserve water. While this initiative is a valiant effort, why do they not place recycling containers for easy disposal of plastics and garbage? With the amount of air travelers, airports could easily place recycling containers throughout their facilities. Bottom line…..when traveling, please express your concern about recycling efforts whereever you are. Perhaps if enough of us voice our concerns, more can be done on both an international, and national level.

Spring is here and its time for spring cleaning! Remember to use products which are made from all natural, environmentally friendly ingredients. Things you have in your cupboards and closets, such as baking soda, vinegar or lemons, can be used to polish, clean and freshen your home. Also, instead of using the dryer to dry your clothing, try hanging them outside for natural freshness, which conserves energy as well. Don’t have a clothes line or a place outside to hang your laundry? Simply install a line in your basement or laundry area. What are your new year resolutions?

Aaahh.  The holidays are over and the days are beginning to get a little longer. Spring is just around the corner, practically! While many of us made our customary New Years’ resolutions of becoming more fit, eating better and enjoying a less stress-free life, I am hopeful that many individuals (and companies alike) made the resolution to become more resolute in their every day life.

Let us remember that each and everything we do to help the environment, small or large, will have a greater impact in the long run.  Simple things like not letting your car idle too long while it is warming up on a cold morning can have a huge impact on our environment.  If you must use bottled watered at the gym or on the go, please please remember to recycle.  Although the preferred method of carrying beverages would be in washable container, remember to toss that water bottle in recycling containers which are available on many sidewalks and in many stores,
